DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, November 23, 2014

I turn to the Bible when I need help or assurance; it is a very useful tool in my life. I know this Bible verse is below, but it really resonated with me and I wanted to share it with you: 2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.

I wanted to include the “Thought for the Day”, “Prayer”, and the “Prayer Focus” written by Philip A. Rice (Michigan) in The Upper Room.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – The truth of God’s word is eternal.

Prayer: Holy One, we are grateful for your living word that shines through every age. May your truth find a home in our hearts. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Scripture reading:

Don’t expect false teachers and evil people to reform and change on their own. Left alone, they will go from bad to worse. If you have the opportunity, correct them so as to bring them back to faith in Christ. Fight for the truth, especially to protect younger Christians.

We must not allow our society to distort or crowd out God’s eternal truth. Spend time every day reflecting on the foundation of your Christian faith found in God’s Word, the great truths that build up your life.

Timothy was one of the first second-generation Christians: He became a Christian, because his mother and grandmother taught him the Holy Scriptures when he was a small child. A parent’s work is vitally important. At home and in church, we should realize that teaching small children is both an opportunity and a responsibility. Jesus wanted little children to come to him. Like Timothy’s mother and grandmother, Eunice and Lois, do your part in leading children to Christ.

The Bible is not a collection of stories, fables, myths, or merely human ideas about God. It is not a human book. Through the Holy Spirit, God revealed his person and plan to certain believers, who wrote down his message for his people (2 Peter 1:20-211). This process is known as inspiration. The writers wrote from their own personal, historical, and cultural contexts. Although they used their own minds, talents, language, and style, they wrote what God wanted them to write. Scripture is completely trustworthy because God was in control of its writing. Its words are entirely authoritative for our faith and life. The Bible is “God-breathed.” Read it, and use its teachings to guide your conduct.

In our zeal for the truth of Scripture, we must never forget its purpose—to equip us to do good. We should not study God’s Word simply to increase our knowledge or to prepare us to win arguments. We should study the Bible so that we will know how to do Christ’s work in the world. Our knowledge of God’s Word is not useful unless it strengthens our faith and leads us to do good. (NLT)

2 Timothy 3:10-17 – But you know what I teach, Timothy, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith and how long I have suffered. You know my love and my patient endurance. You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord delivered me from all of it. Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will go on deceiving others, and they themselves will be deceived.

But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the Holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.

1 “It was the Holy Spirit who moved the prophets to speak from God” means that Scripture did not come from the creative work of the prophets’ own invention or interpretation.  God inspired the writers, so their message is authentic and reliable.  God used the talents, education, and cultural background of each writer (they were not mindless robots); and God cooperated with the writers in such a way to ensure that the message he intended was faithfully communicated in the very words they wrote.  (NLT)

2 Peter 1:20-21 – Above all, you must understand that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophets themselves or because they wanted to prophesy. It was the Holy Spirit who moved the prophets to speak from God.
