DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, December 21, 2014

Like Hannah and Mary, we should be confident of God’s ultimate control over the events in our lives, and we should be thankful for the ways God has blessed us. By praising God for all good gifts, we acknowledge his ultimate control over all the affairs of life. (NLT)

Scripture reading:

Hannah praised God for his answer to her prayer for a son. The theme of her poetic prayer is her confidence in God’s sovereignty and her thankfulness for everything he had done. Mary, the mother of Jesus, modeled her own praise song, called the Magnificat, after Hannah’s prayer (Luke 1:46-551).

Because we live in a world where evil abounds and a nuclear holocaust always threatens, we may forget that God is in control. Hannah saw God as (1) solid as a rock, (2) the one who knows what we do, (3) sovereign over all the affairs of people, and (4) the Supreme Judge who administers perfect justice. Remembering God’s sovereign control helps us put both world and personal events in perspective. (NLT)

1 Samuel 2:1-10 – Then Hannah prayed:

“My heart rejoices in the Lord! Oh, how the Lord has blessed me! Now I have an answer for my enemies, as I delight in your deliverance. No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

“Stop acting so proud and haughty! Don’t speak with such arrogance! The Lord is a God who knows your deeds; and he will judge you for what you have done. Those who were mighty are mighty no more; and those who were weak are now strong. Those who were well fed are now starving; and those who were starving are now full. The barren woman now has seven children; but the woman with many children will have no more. The Lord brings both death and life; he brings some down to the grave but raises others up. The Lord makes one poor and another rich; he brings one down and lifts another up. He lifts the poor from the dust—yes, from a pile of ashes! He treats them like princes, placing them in seats of honor.

“For all the earth is the Lord’s, and he has set the world in order. He will protect his godly ones, but the wicked will perish in darkness. No one will succeed by strength alone. Those who fight against the Lord will be broken. He thunders against them from heaven; the Lord judges throughout the earth. He gives mighty strength to his king; he increases the might of his anointed one.”

1 This son is often called the Magnificat, the first word in the Latin translation of this passage.  Mary’s song has often been used as the basis for choral music and hymns.  Like Hannah, the mother of Samuel, Mary glorified God in song for what he was going to do for the world through her.  Notice that in both songs, God is pictured as a champion of the poor, the oppressed, and the despised.  (NLT)

Luke 1:46-55 – Mary responded, “Oh, how I praise the Lord.  How I rejoice in God my Savior!  For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and now generation after generation will call me blessed.  For he, the Mighty One, is holy, and he has done great things for me.  His mercy goes on from generation to generation, to all who fear him.  His mighty arm does tremendous things!  How he can scatters the proud and haughty ones!  He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.  And how he has helped his servant Israel!  He has not forgotten his promise to be merciful.  For he promised our ancestors—Abraham and his children—to be merciful to them forever.”
