DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, January 27, 2015
Our joy, prayers, and thankfulness should not fluctuate with our circumstances or feelings. Obeying these three commands—be joyful, keep on praying, and be thankful—often goes against our natural inclinations. When we make a conscious decision to do what God says, however, we will begin to see people in a new perspective. When we do God’s will, we will find it easier to be joyful and thankful.
We cannot spend all our time on our knees, but it is possible to have a prayerful attitude at all times. This attitude is built upon acknowledging our dependence on God, realizing his presence within us, and determining to obey him fully. Then we will find it natural to pray frequent, spontaneous, short prayers. A prayerful attitude is not a substitute for regular times of prayer but should be an outgrowth of those times. (NLT)
1 Thessalonians 5:17 – Keep on praying.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6 (NIV)
Today’s story in The Upper Room is titled “GOD’S CALM PRESENCE” and is written by Sue Fairchild (Pennsylvania).
Here is Sue’s story:
“A problem at work plagued me for two weeks. I ran every scenario, checked every figure, and double-checked all my work. I still had no solution. I walked away from the problem and asked others for help, but I was still stuck. Why was my assignment so hard?
“My job title was Budget Analyst, and I analyzed every figure as if my life depended on it. I had done everything within my power and knowledge to make the numbers match. Fear of being fired and frustration with my lack of skills weighed heavily on me. I did the only thing left: I got down on my knees.
“I thought of Philippians 4:6 and 1 Thessalonians 5:17, which instructed me to pray. Right there in my office, I cried out to God. I put my problem in God’s hands. I begged for peace, clarity, a solution. I hesitated to go to God with what I considered a trivial problem; but my heart and various Bible verses told me differently. When I got back on my feet, I felt God’s calm presence. I knew that whatever happened, I would be OK. Although the solution wasn’t immediate (coming a few days later), my heart was immediately filled with peace.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Today I will seek God’s guidance even for the small stuff.
Prayer: Dear God, teach us in every situation to put our faith and trust in you. Amen.
Prayer Focus: THOSE WHO STRUGGLE IN THEIR JOBS

Asa wisely welcomed people who had a close relationship with God, and he listened to their messages. Azariah gave the armies an important warning and encouraged them to stay close to God. Keep in contact with people who are filled with God’s Spirit, and you will learn God’s counsel. Spend regular time in discussion and prayer with those who can help explain and apply God’s message.
Azariah used Israel’s problems as an example of the evil that would come to the people of Judah if they turned away from God as their northern brothers and sisters had.
Azariah encouraged the men of Judah to keep up the good work, “for your work will be rewarded.” This is an inspiration for us, too. Recognition and reward are great motivators that have two dimensions: (1) The temporal dimension. Living by God’s standards may result in acclaim here on earth. (2) The eternal dimension. Permanent recognition and reward will be given in the next life. Don’t be discouraged if you feel your faith in God is going unrewarded here on earth. The best rewards are not in this life but in the life to come. (NLT)
2 Chronicles 15:1-7 – Then the Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded, and he went out to meet King Asa as he was returning from battle. “Listen to me, Asa!” he shouted. “Listen, all you people of Judah and Benjamin! The Lord will stay with you as long as you stay with him! Whenever you seek him, you will find him. But if you abandon him, he will abandon you. For a long time, Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach them, and without God’s law. But whenever you were in distress and turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him out, you found him. During those dark times, it was not safe to travel. Problems troubled the nation on every hand. Nation fought against nation, and city against city, for God was troubling you with every kind of problem. And now, you men of Judah, be strong and courageous, for your work will be rewarded.”
