DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, January 28, 2015
Today’s blog title is a line from the story written by Anthony Collins (Tennessee) that he wrote for The Upper Room titled “EMBRACE THE PAIN.”
Consider it pure joy . . . whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. – James 1:2-4 (NIV)
Here is Anthony’s story:
“When I was a teenager, my father died suddenly. He was the first person I really and truly loved whom death had taken from me. It was devastating, and I was inconsolable. But as I look back at that even now, I can see the blessings of the Lord on the life of our family in spite of my grief and our loss. While we missed my father terrible, our family grew much closer as a result of his passing. We were able to show our love toward each other in ways we never had while he was alive. The truth was that in spite of the pain, I became a stronger and better person after my father’s death.
“Sometimes it seems difficult to have the proper perspective when we are going through a trying time. When we experience a great loss, such as financial ruin or the loss of a significant relationship, we can easily emerge with a broken heart or broken spirit. But to continue to allow our feelings of despair to overwhelm us is neither healthy nor wise. Instead, we can remember the words in today’s quoted scripture – that God works through distress to bless. Every trial can bring us closer to God – if we let it.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Every test of life can bring us closer to God.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to embrace the pain of our lives and find you at work even in our grieving. Amen.
Prayer Focus: FATHERS

This passage reaffirms God’s profound love for his people. No matter what happens to us, no matter where we are, we can never be separated from his love. Suffering should not drive us away from God but help us to identify with him and allow his love to heal us.
These verses contain one of the most comforting promises in all Scripture. Believers have always had to face hardships in many forms: persecution, illness, imprisonment, and even death. These sometimes cause them to fear that they have been abandoned by Christ. But Paul exclaims that it is impossible to be separated from Christ. His death for us is proof of his unconquerable love. Nothing can separate us from Christ’s presence. God tells us how great his love is so that we will feel totally secure in him. If we believe these overwhelming assurances, we will not be afraid. (NLT)
Romans 8:35-39 – Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or are hungry or cold or in danger or threatened with death? (Even the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
