DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, January 29, 2015

Today’s author of the story in The Upper Room passed away while the issue was in production. My condolences go out to Mrs. Terri Meehan’s (Surrey, England) friends and family. In honor of Mrs. Terri Meehan, I would like to share with you her story titled “NEVER ALONE.”

God said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5 (NRSV)

Here is Terri’s story:

“I have a good friend who offers me comforting advice when I need it. However, since an ocean divides us, I see her only once a year. I often wonder how we remain close despite the time and distance. The cost of telephone long distance is expensive, so my friend and I have a one-ring code. When my telephone rings only once, I know my friend is thinking of me. God sends similar signals to me every day. When I hear a kind word from a stranger or I am wrapped in the arms of a loved one, I know that God is with me just as my friend and I remain close in thought.

“God’s love lives forever in my heart. I have never seen God, yet I know that God is with me always. I know that through my thoughts I can reach God, who hears my prayers and showers me with loving-kindness. I talk to God as I do my friend, and I can sense God’s presence in the world around me. I am never alone.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God is with us – always.

Prayer: Dear God, relieve our worries and cares today. May your love guide us from morning until night, when we lie down in peaceful sleep as we pray, “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation” (Luke 11:2-4, NIV). Amen.

Prayer Focus: THOSE WHO NEED TO KNOW THAT GOD IS NEAR

Scripture reading:

The people of Israel felt that God had forsaken them in Babylon; but Isaiah pointed out that God would never forget them, as a loving mother would not forget her little child. When we feel that God has forsaken us, we must ask if we have forsaken and forgotten God (see Deuteronomy 31:61). (NLT)

Isaiah 49:14-15 – Yet Jerusalem says, “The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.”

“Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for a child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!”
