DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, February 16, 2015
The apostle John also referred to Jesus as the “light” (John 1:9). Jesus referred to himself as “the light of the world” (John 8:12). (NLT)
John 1:9 – The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was going to come into the world.
* Jesus brings God’s presence, protection, and guidance. Is he the light of your world? (NLT)
John 8:12 – Jesus said to the people, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
In our gloom and despair, we fear that our sorrows and troubles will never end. But we can take comfort in this certainty: Although the Lord may not always spare us from troubles, if we follow him wholeheartedly, he will lead us safely through them. (NLT)
Isaiah 9:1-7 – Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will soon be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light—a light that will shine on all who live in the land where death casts its shadow. Israel will again be great, and its people will rejoice as people rejoice at harvest time. They will shout with joy like warriors dividing the plunder. For God will break the chains that bind his people and the whip that scourges them, just as he did when he destroyed the army of Midian with Gideon’s little band. In that day of peace, battle gear will no longer be issued. Never again will uniforms be bloodstained by war. All such equipment will be burned.
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His ever expanding, peaceful government will never end. He will rule forever with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David. The passionate commitment of the Lord Almighty will guarantee this!
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. – Isaiah 12:2 (NIV)
Sara S. Orellana (Florida) has a moving story titled “NO SOURCE SIGNAL.”
Here is Sara’s story:
“I was going through a difficult time. My husband and I had divorced after 15 years of marriage. Then a year later he was killed in a motorcycle accident. I was struggling to keep myself and our teenage son on track. My faith in God was strong; but the day-to-day challenges of single parenthood, financial insecurity, and grief were taking their toll. Spending time with God had moved further down my to-do list.
“A friend asked me to join her women’s Bible study group. Studying Isaiah 30:15 taught me the important of listening for God’s direction: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.’ I found comfort and strength as I renewed my relationship with God. How immediate and accessible is our God! Joining a Bible study helped to correct my priorities and to connect me with our all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present Lord.”
Prayer: Dear God, forgive us when the demands of daily life become our idols. Help us always to put you first and to listen closely and quietly for your guidance. Amen.
Prayer Focus: SINGLE PRAENTS
