DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, April 1, 2015

Scripture reading:

Jesus was soon going to leave the disciples, but he would remain with them. How could this be? The Counselor—the Spirit of God himself—would come after Jesus was gone to care for and guide the disciples. The Holy Spirit is within us and all believers, helping us live as God wants and build Christ’s church on earth. By faith we can appropriate the Spirit’s power each day.

The word translated “Counselor” combines the ideas of comfort and counsel. The Holy Spirit is a powerful person on our side, working for and with us.

The end result of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives is deep and lasting peace. Unlike worldly peace, which is usually defined as the absence of conflict, this peace is confident assurance in any circumstance, with Christ’s peace, we have no need to fear the present or the future. If your life is full of stress, allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with Christ’s peace (see Philippians 4:6-71 for more on experiencing God’s peace). (NLT)

John 14:15-21, 27 – [Jesus said] “If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you do, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. In just a little while the world will not see me again, but you will. For I will live again, and you will, too. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them.”

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16 (NIV)

Tomorrow is not promised

Kathleen Buskirk (California) had been diagnosed with a rare cancer. Kathleen tells her story in The Upper Room and titled her story “THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING;” here is a portion of Kathleen’s story:

“. . . Jesus said, ‘In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world’ (John 16:33). This, friends, changes everything. Because I feel Jesus’ constant love and presence, I can cope with my diagnosis, praying constantly, instead of worrying.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – The promise of Easter changes everything.

Prayer: Loving God, increase our faith, fill our hearts with your peace, and help us to trust you in all the circumstances of our lives. Amen.

1 Imagine never worrying about anything! It seems like an impossibility; we all have worries on the job, in our homes, at school. But Paul’s advice is to turn our worries into prayers. Do you want to worry less? Then pray more! Whenever you start to worry, stop and pray.

God’s peace is different from the world’s peace. True peace is not found in positive thinking, in absence of conflict, or in good feelings. It comes from knowing that God is in control. Our citizenship in Christ’s Kingdom is sure, our destiny is set, and we can have victory over sin. Let God’s peace guard your heart against anxiety. (NLT)

Philippians 4:6-7 – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
