Scripture reading:

When Jesus asked Philip where they could buy a great amount of bread, Philip started assessing the probable cost. Jesus wanted to teach him that financial resources are not the most important ones. We can limit what God does in us by assuming what is and is not possible. Is there some impossible task that you believe God wants you to do? Don’t let your estimate of what can’t be done keep you from taking on the task. God can do the miraculous; trust him to provide the resources.

The disciples are contrasted with the youngster who brought what he had. They certainly had more resources than the boy, but they knew they didn’t have enough, so they didn’t give anything at all. The boy gave what little he had, and it made all the difference. If we offer nothing to God, he will have nothing to use. But he can’t take what little we have and turn it into something great.

There is a lesson in the leftovers. God gives in abundance. He takes whatever we can offer him in time, ability, or resources and multiplies its effectiveness beyond our wildest expectations. If you take the first step in making yourself available to God, he will show you how greatly you can be used to advance the work of his Kingdom. (NLT)

John 6:5-13 – Jesus soon saw a great crowd of people climbing the hill, looking for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Philip, where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. Philip replied, “It would take a small fortune to feed them!”

Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

“Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus ordered. So all of them—the men alone numbered five thousand—sat down on the grassy slopes. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and passed them out to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate until they were full. “Now gather the leftovers,” Jesus told his disciples, “so that nothing is wasted.” There were only five barley loaves to start with, but twelve baskets were filled with the pieces of bread the people did not eat!

Andrew said, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” – John 6:9 (NIV)

Kim Harms (Iowa) titled her story “COUNTING TO TEN;” here is a portion of Kim’s story:

“In preparation for my mission trip, I planned to learn a variety of useful Haitian Creole words and phrases. But that goal dropped so low on my priority list that when I arrived all I could say in Creole were the numbers one through ten. . .

“In today’s reading, Jesus used a boy’s five loaves of bread and two fish to feed thousands of people. My ability to count to ten in Haitian Creole did not help thousands, but it did help eight sewing students. It’s easy to disregard the little things, but God can turn the little things we offer into great blessings – for ourselves and for others.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – What little things has God used in my life recently?

Prayer: Dear God, help us to recognize the little things in our lies and use them for your glory. Amen.

Prayer Focus: THOSE WHO THINK THEIR OFFERINGS ARE TOO SMALL FOR GOD TO USE
