DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, May 23, 2015
Our actions must be motivated by God’s love so that all we do will be for his glory. Keep this as a guiding principle by asking, “Is this action glorifying God?” or “How can I honor God through this action?”
Paul’s criterion for all his actions was not what he liked best but what was best for those around him. The opposite approach would be (1) being insensitive and doing what we want, no matter who is hurt by it; (2) being oversensitive and doing nothing, for fear that someone may be displeased; (3) being a “yes person” by going along with everything, trying to gain approval from people rather than from God. In this age of “me first” and “looking out for number one,” Paul’s startling statement is a good standard. If we make the good of others one of our primary goals, we will develop a serving attitude that pleases God. (NLT)
1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1 – Whatever ou eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God. Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God. That is the plan I follow, too. I try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what I like or what is best for me, but what is best for them so they may be saved.
And you should follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s.
Mary Ziober (Louisiana) titled her story “FOLLOW ME;” here is a portion of Mary’s story:
“. . . That day, it occurred to me that believers are charged with the task of being an example for others to follow, leading them to Christ. As we find ourselves at the market, at work, or at school, our actions are being viewed and evaluated by others. As we direct our lives toward heaven, we can bring others with us by living a life that models the life of Jesus Christ.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – If someone’s going to follow me, I want to lead that person to Christ.
Prayer: Dear Lord, remind us that the actions of our lives show others the way to our destination. May our actions always direct them to Christ and his eternal glory in heaven. Amen.
