DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, June 15, 2015
Moses’ prayer was to see the manifest glory of God. He wanted assurance of God’s presence with him, Aaron, and Joshua, and also he desired to know that presence experientially. Because we are finite and morally imperfect, we cannot exist and see God as he is. To see God’s back means we can only see where God has passed by. We can only know him by what he does and how he acts. We cannot comprehend God as he really is apart from Jesus Christ. Jesus promised to show himself to those who believe. (NLT)
Exodus 33:12-23 – Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You call me by name and tell me I have found favor with you. Please, if this is really so, show me your intentions so I will understand you more fully and do exactly what you want me to do. Besides, don’t forget that this nation is your very own people.”
And the Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses. I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.”
Then Moses said, “If you don’t go with us personally, don’t leave us move a step from this place. If you don’t go with us, how will anyone ever know that your people and I have found favor with you? How else will they know we are special and distinct from all other people on the earth?”
And the Lord replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and you are my friend.”
Then Moses had one more request. “Please let me see your glorious presence,” he said.
The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, ‘the Lord,’ to you. I will show kindness to anyone I choose, and I will show mercy to anyone I choose. But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” The Lord continued, “Stand here on this rock beside me. As my glorious presence passes by, I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed. Then I will remove my hand, and you will see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.”
Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. – Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
Ruth Ann Dalley (California) titled her story “A DEEPER LONGING;” here is Ruth Ann’s story:
“Seeking God is the first step of faith for those who want to know, understand, and follow God who desires fellowship with us. I learned this lesson from my friend Brenda, whose life is a witness to me. Her everyday behavior is a message to me from the Holy Spirit.
“When I was struggling to see God, Brenda had the spiritual insight I was missing. I realized that she practices noticing and acknowledging God’s presence minute by minute every day. I have learned that the power of the Holy Spirit is more available to us when we practice consciously living in God’s presence. I want to live that way every day.
“Our efforts glorify God when we praise and thank God aloud and when we encourage and accept other people. Graciousness, joy, and peace are God’s gifts to us so that we can be grateful servants, witness for God.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Living in God’s presence gives peace to our souls.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for wanting a living conversation with us. Make us more aware of your presence each moment of the day. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
