DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, July 1, 2015
Paul offers a strategy to help us live for God day by day: (1) Imitate Christ’s compassionate, forgiving attitude; (2) let love guide your life; (3) let the peace of Christ rule in our heart; (4) always be thankful; (5) keep God’s Word in you at all times; (6) live as Jesus Christ’s representative.
The word rule comes from the language of athletics: Paul tells us to let Christ’s peace be umpire or referee in our heart. Our heart is the center of conflict because there our feelings and desires clash–our fears and hopes, distrust and trust, jealousy and love. How can we deal with these constant conflicts and live as God wants? Paul explains that we must decide between conflicting elements by using the rule of peace. Which choice will promote peace in our souls and in our churches? (NLT)
Colossians 3:12-17 – Since God chose you to be the holy people whom he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. You must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive others. And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are all called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
Let the words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use his words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. — Galatians 5:22-23 (CEB)
Margaret Anne Martin (Otago, New Zealand) titled her story “OUTWARD SIGNS;” here is a portion of Margaret Anne’s story:
“For the last six years, my husband and I have been teaching in a bilingual school in the northeast part of Thailand. The plain silver cross I wear has given me a connection to Thai Christians, despite the language barrier between us. One heartwarming experience was hearing a voice in the local marketplace say in hesitant English, ‘Are you a Christian? I am too. God bless you!’ . . .
“While I was glad to be recognized as a Christian by my cross, I would rather be identified as a follower of Jesus by my actions and by the way I conduct my life. Too often I fail to live up to the teachings of Christ in my everyday life. However, as I study the Bible, pray, and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, I trust that with God’s help, I will become more like Jesus and show his love and compassion in my life.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – How do I show God’s love to those around me?
Prayer: O God of all the world, help us each day to follow your teachings faithfully and to show — through the way we live — that we belong to you. Amen.
