DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, July 8, 2015

Scripture reading:

We are to be considerate (reasonable, fair minded, and charitable) to [everyone even] those outside the church, and not just to fellow believers. This means we are not to seek revenge against those who treat us unfairly, nor are we to be overly vocal about our personal rights.

God’s peace is different from the world’s peace. True peace is not found in positive thinking, in absence of conflict, or in good feelings. It comes from knowing that God is in control. Our citizenship in Christ’s Kingdom is sure, our destiny is set, and we can have victory over sin. Let God’s peace guard your heart against anxiety.

What we put into our mind determines what comes out in our words and actions. Paul tells us to program our mind with thoughts that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. Do you have problems with impure thoughts and daydreams? Examine what you are putting into your mind through television, books, conversations, movies, and magazines. Replace harmful input with wholesome material. Above all, read God’s Word and pray. Ask God to help you focus your mind on what is good and pure. It takes practice, but it can be done. (NLT)

Philippians 4:4-8 – Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again–rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, let me say one more thing as I close this letter. Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. — Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Andrew Billings (Alabama) titled his story “CUSTOMER SERVICE;” here is Andrew’s story:

“‘Your call is very important to us,’ says the typical customer service recording. When I hear that, I think: If it were that important to you, someone would be there to answer!  After discovering how long the wait will be, sometimes I just hang up the phone because what I needed wasn’t that important or pressing.

“How great it is to contrast that experience with our prayers to God!  Sometimes I hear people criticize other people’s prayers because they request seemingly unimportant things: for their favorite sports team to win or for the weather to be nice for a trip they plan to take.  Yet, the verse quoted above tells us that there are no unimportant prayers.  God can take all these ‘calls’ at once, encouraging us to call frequently and with any kind of request.  We are instructed to take all our concerns to the Lord in prayer, not just the life-or-death ones.

“What a marvelous feeling it is to share everything with God: the big, the small, and all the things that lie in between!”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – My call is very important to God.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for hearing all the thoughts we bring to you and for loving us unconditionally.  Amen.
