Today’s scripture reading:

It is human nature to make our own plans and then ask God to bless them. Instead, we should seek God’s will first. By constantly thinking about the Lord and his way of living, we will gain insights that will help us make right decisions and live the way God desires. Communicating with God allows him to counsel us and give us wisdom.

By saying that he “will not be shaken,” David was talking about the unique sense of security felt by believers. God does not exempt believers from the day-to-day circumstances of life. Believers and unbelievers alike experience pain, trouble, and failure at times (Matthew 5:45 [below]). Unbelievers have a sense of hopelessness about life and confusion over their true purpose on earth. Those who seek God, however, can move ahead, confident in knowing what is right in God’s eyes. They know that God will keep them from straying off his chosen path.

David’s heart was glad–he had found the secret to joy. True joy is far deeper than happiness; we can feel joy in spite of our deepest troubles. Happiness is temporary because it is based on external circumstances, but joy is lasting because it is based on God’s presence within us. As we contemplate his daily presence, we will find contentment. As we understand the future he has for us, we will experience joy. Don’t base your life on circumstances, but on God. (NLT)

Psalm 16:5-11 – Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine. The land you have given me is a pleasant land. What a wonderful inheritance!

I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

No wonder my heart is filled with joy, and my mouth shouts his praises! My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your godly one to rot in the grave.

You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence, and the pleasures of living with you forever.

The psalmist wrote, “You will fill me with joy in your presence. — Psalm 16:11 (NIV)

Jane A. Compton (Oregon) titled her story “GOD’S PRESENCE BRINGS JOY;” here is a portion of Jane’s story:

“Today’s technology blesses grandparents who live long distances from their grandchildren. My husband and I delight in conversations with our young grandchildren using computers and smart phones. During a live-screen computer visit, we can read picture books together, watch as they get their hair shampooed, laugh as they play bubble games, and even share in bedtime prayers.

“Enjoying these interactions with our grandkids makes me think about how much more God enjoys interacting with us. When we read and reflect on scripture, participate in Christian fellowship, serve those in need, and pray regularly, we draw near to God. More than focusing on activities or works, God values our desire to spend time with our Creator. God asks us simply to come and rest in that presence.

“I’m thankful that God is with us in all circumstances. . . .”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Being in God’s presence brings joy.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for creating us for relationship with you. Your presence with us is a gift beyond measure. Amen.

Prayer Focus: GRANDPARENTS FAR FROM THEIR GRANDCHILDREN
