DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, July 16, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Isaiah describes God’s power to create, his provision to sustain, and his presence to help. God is almighty and all-powerful, but even so, he cares for each of us personally. No person or thing can be compared to God. We describe God as best we can with our limited knowledge and language, but we only limit our understanding of him and his power when we compare him to what we experience on earth. What is your concept of God, especially as revealed in his Son, Jesus Christ? Don’t limit his work in your life by underestimating him.
Even the strongest people get tired at times, but God’s power and strength never diminish. He is never too tired or too busy to help and listen. His strength is our source of strength. When you feel all of life crushing you and you cannot go another step, remember that you can call upon God to renew your strength.
Waiting on the Lord is the patient expectation that God will fulfill his promises in his Word and strengthen us to rise above life’s difficulties. It means to completely trust in God. (NLT)
Isaiah 40:27-31 – O Israel, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles? How can you say God refuses to hear your case? Have you never heard or understood? Don’t you know that the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth? He never grows faint or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to those who are tired and worn out; he offers strength to the weak. Even youths will become exhausted, and young men will give up. But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
[The Lord] gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. — Isaiah 40:29
Wayne Greenawalt (Illinois) titled his story “STRENGTH IN ADVERSITY;” here is a portion of Wayne’s story:
“In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013 the people of Boston responded with the outcry, ‘Boston Strong.’ . . . As i listened to newscasters reporting these happenings, I wondered: Where does a nation find the strength to endure adversity and overcome tragedy?
“Isaiah 40:27-31 gives us the answer: ‘the everlasting God.’ . . . Even the strongest people grow weak and experience exhaustion. But God’s strength and power are never depleted. God’s power is our source of strength.
“To experience this renewal we are to ‘wait on the Lord.’ Worship can be a regular part of our daily routine, calling upon God in prayer, meditating on God’s promises, and waiting for God to guide and empower us. When we feel worn-out by life’s challenges, we can call upon God to renew our strength.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – We can overcome life’s difficulties with God’s love.
Prayer: Help us, everlasting God, to take time today to meditate on your word and be renewed. Amen.
