DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, July 19, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Lying to each other disrupts unity by creating conflicts and destroying trust. It tears down relationships and leads to open warfare in a church.
The Bible doesn’t tell us that we shouldn’t feel angry, but it points out that it is important to handle our anger properly. If vented thoughtlessly, anger can hurt others and destroy relationships. If bottled up inside, it can cause us to become bitter and destroy us from within. Paul tells us to deal with our anger immediately in a way that builds relationships rather than destroys them. If we nurse our anger, we will give Satan an opportunity to divide us. Are you angry with someone right now? What can you do to resolve your differences? Don’t let the day end before you begin to work on mending your relationship.
We can bring sorrow to the Holy Spirit by the way we live. Paul warns us against unwholesome language, bitterness, improper use of anger, harsh words, slander, and bad attitudes toward others. Instead of acting that way, we should be forgiving, just as God has forgiven us. Are you bringing sorrow or pleasing God with your attitudes and actions? Act in love toward your brothers and sisters in Christ, just as God acted in love by sending his Son to die for your sins. (NLT)
Ephesians 4:25-32 – So put away all falsehood and “tell your neighbor the truth” because we belong to each other. And “don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil.
If you are a thief, stop stealing. Begin using your hands for honest work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he is the one who has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Chris Driver’s (Gautang, South Africa) story is titled “SMALL BUT WORTHWHILE;” here is Chris’s story:
“‘What did your hands do today?’ One day I came across that question in a devotional book. When I paused to ponder my answer, I realized that what I was doing with my hands was small but worthwhile. On Mondays I go to the church and take apart the large church flower arrangement from the Sunday services to make small bouquets for the sick, elderly, or lonely members. I spend a few hours sorting the flowers and rearranging them. Then someone else distributes them.
“Although my work is a small effort, I know it spreads joy and love to people who often feel forgotten. We all have a need to be noticed and acknowledged. We all have a need for someone to say we count, especially when things are not going so well in our lives. That’s what I am trying to do. We can each do something to brighten another’s day. All it takes is the power of our loving imagination and the work of our hands.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Whatever I do, I can work at it with all my heart, as though I were working for the Lord. (See [below] Colossians 3:23.)
Prayer: Dear God, help us to serve you and share your love, giving new life and hope to others. Amen.
Prayer Focus: THOSE WHO RECEIVE THE GIFTS OF OUR HANDS

Since the Creation, God has given us work to do. If we could regard our work as an act of worship or service to God, such an attitude would take some of the drudgery and boredom out of it. We could work without complaining or resentment if we would treat our job problems as the cost of discipleship. (NLT)
Colossians 3:23 – Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
