DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, July 26, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Deuteronomy 31:1-8 – When Moses had finished saying these things to all the people of Israel, he said, “I am now 120 years old and am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has told me that I will not cross the Jordan River. But the Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy the nations living there, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua is your new leader, and he will go with you, just as the Lord promised. The Lord will destroy the nations living in the land, just as he destroyed Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites. The Lord will hand over to you the people who live there, and you will deal with them as I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid of them! The Lord your God will go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor forsake you.”
Then Moses called for Joshua, and as all Israel watched he said to him, “Be strong and courageous! For you will lead these people into the land that the Lord swore to give their ancestors. You are the one who will deliver it to them as their inheritance. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is the one who goes before you. He will be with you: he will neither fail you nor forsake you.”
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. — Deuteronomy 31:8 (NRSV)
Sandi Marr (Ontario, Canada) titled her story “LETTING GO;” here is portion of Sandi’s story:
“Several years ago when I changed jobs and moved to a new city, I left behind my young-adult sons. . . As I was embracing my new surroundings, I was diagnosed with cancer. My health changed dramatically, and my world turned upside down. These changes challenged me, but everyone experiences change.
“As Christ-followers our journey of embracing and letting go is grounded in God’s eternal love, grace, and mercy. Sometimes segments of this journey are long and arduous; sometimes they are brief and joyful. The freedom to embrace and to let go is a gift from God.
“No matter where we are on our journey, God is with us. . .
“Today I am thankful for God’s faithful presence in life’s changes, both joyful and difficult. As we accept life’s transitions, we make room for something new — a more loving heart, a more trusting spirit, and a more peaceful soul.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Letting go is always rooted in God’s love, grace, and mercy.
Prayer: Journeying God, help us embrace your faithfulness in times of transition and change. Amen.
