DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, July 30, 2015
Here is a note that I would like to add about the verse from Psalm 68:6.
Only in God is there hope for orphans, widows, prisoners, and all other lonely people. If you are lonely or disadvantaged, join David in praise, and discover great joy from loving and praising God. (NLT)
Today’s scripture reading:
Many people–even Christians–live only to make a good impression on others or to please themselves. But selfishness brings discord. Paul therefore stressed spiritual unity, asking the Philippians to love one another and to be one in spirit and purpose. When we work together, caring for the problems of others as if they were our problems, we demonstrate Christ’s example of putting others first, and we experience unity. Don’t be so concerned about making a good impression or meeting your own needs that you strain relationships in God’s family. (NLT)
Philippians 2:1-4 – Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and sympathetic? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose.
Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.
God sets the lonely in families. — Psalm 68:6 (NIV)
Mary McKheen (Michigan) titled her story “UNTOLD BLESSINGS;” here is a portion of Mary’s story:
“. . . I described my life as a single, childless woman, who struggles with feelings of loneliness and purposelessness. . .
“Although we live hundreds of miles apart and there is almost a 30-year difference in our ages, Doris and I have become good friends. . .
“God has wonderful ways of meeting our needs. I find it amazing that God connected Doris and me. What a joy it is that we serve a God who knows our deepest needs and takes joy in meeting these needs — often in beautiful and unexpected ways!”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God blesses us in unexpected ways.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of friendship. Help us to be the face of Christ both to our current friends and to friends we have yet to meet. Amen.
Prayer Focus: SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A FRIEND
