DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Light represents what is good, pure, true, holy, and reliable. Darkness represents what is sinful and evil. The statement “God is light” means that God is perfectly holy and true and that he alone can guide us out of the darkness of sin. Light is also related to truth in that light exposes whatever exists, whether it is good or bad. In the dark, good and evil look alike; in the light, they can be clearly distinguished. Just as darkness cannot exist in the presence of light, sin cannot exist in the presence of a holy God. If we want to have a relationship with God, we must put aside our sinful ways of living. To claim that we belong to him but then to go out and live for ourselves is hypocrisy. Christ will expose and judge such deceit. (NLT)

1 John 1:5-9 – This is the message he has given us to announce to you: God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not living in the truth. But if we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ is, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from every sin.

If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.

If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 John 1:9 (NRSV)

James W. (Skip) Cox (North Carolina) titled his story “A NEW START;” here is a portion of James’s story:

“As part of our retirement plan, my wife and I are building a new home. . .

“I began to compare this process to my own life. God promises to clear my life by removing the trees of sin, the vines of doubt, the roots of unworthy living, and all of the clutter that has led me to make poor choices. . .

“To anyone willing to accept God’s offer of redemption, God promises a new life and a rewarding relationship. I have learned that it is never too late to respond to God’s invitations. God will continue to knock on the door of our hearts until we make the choice to open it and let God enter. (See [below] Matt. 7:7 . . . Rev. 3:20.)”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God can cleanse any life.

Prayer: Our heavenly Father, help us remove everything that stands int eh way of responding to your offer of a relationship with you. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

~ Jesus tells us to persist in pursuing God. People often give up after a few halfhearted efforts and conclude that God cannot be found. But knowing God takes faith, focus, and follow-trough, and Jesus assures us that we will be rewarded. Don’t give up in your efforts to seek God. Continue to ask him for more knowledge, patience, wisdom, love, and understanding. He will give them to you. (NLT)

Matthew 7:7 – [Jesus said] “Keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and door will be opened.”

~ Jesus knocks at the door of our heart because he want to save us and have fellowship with us. He is patient and persistent in trying to get through to us–not breaking and entering, but knocking. He allows us to decide whether or not to open our life to him. Do you intentionally keep his life-changing presence and power on the other side of the door? (NLT)

Revelation 3:20 – [Jesus said] “Look! Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends.”
