DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, August 14, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Our society confuses love and lust. Unlike lust, God’s kind of love is directed outward toward others, not inward toward ourselves. It is utterly unselfish. This kind of love goes against our natural inclinations. It is impossible to have this love unless God helps us set aside our own natural desires so that we can love and not expect anything in return. Thus, the more we become like Christ, the more love we will show to others. (NLT)
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 – Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. — Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
Mary Quick (West Virginia) titled her story “GIVING WAY TO OTHERS;” here is a portion of Mary’s story:
“Every time I leave my rural home, I must drive a few miles down a one-lane road. . .
“This back-road driving reminds me of what it means to ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ (Matt. 19:19). Such love means being considerate of others, making their way easier, and considering their welfare before my own. Sometimes, it means I must give up something or delay my own needs to help another.
“What a blessing it is to be open to the needs of others who might be in a tight spot and to find ‘wide spaces’ to help them move forward in their journey! We too are blessed when we receive the gifts others give to help us on our way.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Jesus showed us how to put the needs of others above our own.
Prayer: Dear God, give us a sense of the needs of others and a willingness to serve them in whatever way we can. Amen.
