DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, August 20, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
When Paul said that the Philippians were partners in the Good News, he was pointing out their valuable contribution in spreading God’s message.
Do you sometimes feel as though you aren’t making progress in your spiritual life? When God starts a project, he completes it! As with the Philippians, God will help you grow in grace until he has completed his work in your life. When you are discouraged, remember that God won’t give up on you. He promises to finish the work he has begun. When you feel incomplete, unfinished, or distressed by your shortcomings, remember God’s promise and provision. Don’t let your present condition rob you of the joy of knowing Christ or keep you from growing closer to him. The God who began a good work within us continues it throughout our lifetime and will finish it when we meet him face to face.
Wherever Paul was, even in prison, he faithfully preached the Good News. Remember Paul’s inspiring example when hindrances, small or large, slow down your work for God.
What do we do when we don’t feel like obeying? God has not left us alone in our struggles to do his will. He wants to come alongside us and be within us to help. God helps us desire to obey him and then gives us the power to do what he wants. The secret to a changed life is to submit to God’s control and let him work. Next time ask God to help you desire to do his will. (NLT)
Philippians 1:4-7, 2:13 – I always pray for you, and I make my requests with a heart full of joy because you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. And I am sure that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on that day when Christ Jesus comes back again.
It is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a very special place in my heart. We have shared together the blessings of God, both when I was in prison and when I was out, defending the truth and telling others the Good News.
For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.
Who are you to judge someone else’s servants? They stand or fall before their own Lord (and they will stand, because the Lord has the power to make them stand). — Romans 14:4 (CEB)
Jeff Adams (Arizona) titled his story “LEARNING TO WALK;” here is a portion of Jeff’s story:
“When children learn to walk, falling is an expected part of the process. In the same way, adults learning something new should not expect to succeed immediately. As we are growing in spiritual maturity, failures will come. Failing is part of what makes us human.
“We are imperfect, unfinished works in progress. . . Striving to grow and change — to become spiritually mature — is a never-ending process.
“Just as falling does not startle small children — or their parents — God is not surprised when we stumble or fall. Instead, God assures us that we are forgiven. For when we stumble into sin, we also find God’s grace.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Whether walking or stumbling, we are God’s children.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for helping us as we stumble our way through becoming spiritually mature. Amen.
