DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, September 9, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Have you ever grown tired of praying for something or someone? Paul says we should “devote” ourselves to prayer and be “alert” in prayer. Our persistence is an expression of our faith that God answers our prayers. Faith shouldn’t die if the answers come slowly, for the delay may be God’s way of working his will in our life. When you feel tired of praying, know that God is present, always listening, always answering–maybe not in ways you had hoped, but in ways that he knows are best.
The “secret plan” is Christ’s Good News of salvation. The whole focus of Paul’s life was to tell others about Christ, explaining and preaching this wonderful mystery.
Paul asked for prayer that he could proclaim the Good News about Christ clearly, and we can request prayer to do the same. No matter what approach to evangelism we use, whether emphasizing life-style and example or whether building relationships, we should never obscure the message of the Good News.
When we tell others about Christ, it is important always to be gracious in what we say. No matter how much sense the message makes, we lose our effectiveness if we are not courteous. Just as we like to be respected, we must respect others if we want them to listen to what we have to say. (NLT)
Colossians 4:2-6 – Devote yourselves to prayer with a alert mind and a thankful heart. Don’t forget to pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to preach about his secret plan–that Christ is also for you Gentiles. That is why I am here in chains. Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should.
Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and effective so that you will have the right answer for everyone.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. — Colossians 4:2 (NIV)
Clifford B. Rawley (Missouri) titled his story “HOLY INTERMISSIONS;” here is a portion of Clifford’s story:
“As I was growing up in church, we used to sing a hymn about a ‘sweet hour of prayer.’ But whenever I tried to pray for an hour, I failed — and I felt defeated.
“As an adult I no longer try to pray for 60 minutes. What helps me are short periods of time with God. Several times a day, I set aside five or ten minutes to focus on my Lord. . . These ‘intermissions’ become even more meaningful as I look around at God’s marvelous creation. I hear the birds and notice the beauty of flowers, and I praise God for these wonderful works. If I am distracted by anxious thoughts, I take a moment to count 10 blessings in my life and voice my gratitude to God.
“These moments of renewal help me to see each day as God’s gift — and my need to honor God on that day. As I continue these spiritual practices, I experience the renewing and nurturing touch of the Spirit of God.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Prayer is about a heartfelt desire to draw near to God.
Prayer: Dear Lord, may we not forget you in our rushed routines. Help us to connect with you throughout each day. Amen.
