DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, September 14, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Isaiah 41:17-20 – “When the poor and needy search for water and there is none, and their tongues are parched from thirst, then I, the Lord, will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will never forsake them. I will open up rivers for them on high plateaus. I will give them fountains of water in the valleys. In the deserts they will find pools of water. Rivers fed by springs will flow across the dry, parched ground. I will plant trees–cedar, acacia, myrtle, olive, cypress, fir, and pine–on barren land. Everyone will see this miracle and understand that it is the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, who did it.”

Let’s throw off any extra baggage, get rid of the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus. — Hebrews 12:1-2 (CEB)

See Jesus in trees

Can you find Jesus in the picture? (Answer in tomorrow’s post)

Joan Campbell (Gauteng, South Africa) titled her story “GUTTERS OF GRACE;” here is a portion of Joan’s story:

“In our area fierce summer thunderstorms often drop a large amount of rain in a very short time. The gutters of my house serve a vital function by channeling the rain. . .

“In a way, we are called to be ‘gutters,’ channels of God’s love and grace. Yet — like the gutters on the roof of my house — our lives can become filled with debris. When this happens, we fail to be effective channels of God’s refreshing and life-giving water. This debris will look slightly different for each of us. Perhaps it is the busyness of our lives or the worries and fears that consume our thinking. Perhaps it is an unwillingness to forgive or unresolved issues from our past. For me, ambition and seeking people’s approval often take center stage in my life.

“Anything that causes us to focus on ourselves instead of on God can prevent us from being effective servants. When we regularly ask God to show us this debris and allow God to help us clean it out, we can become channels of God’s grace.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I want to be a channel of God’s love to others.

Prayer: Dear God, help us to remove from our lives anything that is keeping us from seeing you and the needs of those around us. Amen.
