DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, September 19, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
These verses contain one of the most comforting promises in all Scripture. Believers have always had to face hardships in many forms: persecution, illness, imprisonment, and even death. These sometimes cause them to fear that they have been abandoned by Christ. But Paul exclaims that it is impossible to be separated from Christ. His death for us is proof of his unconquerable love. Nothing can separate us from Christ’s presence. God tells us how great his love is so that we will feel totally secure in him. If we believe these overwhelming assurances, we will not be afraid. (NLT)
Romans 8:35-39 – Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or are hungry or cold or in danger or threatened with death?
Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)
Ray Sison (Manila, Philippines) titled his story “RESURRECTION FAITH;” here is a portion of Ray’s story:
“I could hear my son, Raham, sobbing in the next room. We were burying his grandfather Liberto that day. I couldn’t think of anything to say to ease his grief, perhaps because I was devastated myself. . .
“Later as I embraced my son, I sensed God saying to me, ‘I know it seems your world has fallen out from under your feet. But in death as in life, your dad is mine. I hold him in my hand. I will never let him go, just as I have let you go.’
“At the funeral, I read these words: ‘Dying, Christ destroyed our death. Rising, Christ restored our life. Christ will come again in glory. . .’ Joy welled up in my heart through my tears. I knew Dad was alive and well in the bosom of God. My faith had been restored.”
Prayer: God of grace and glory, when we are grieving, help us to remember your promise of eternal life. Amen.
