DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, September 23, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Elijah knew that the sound of gentle whisper was God’s voice. He realized that God doesn’t reveal himself only in powerful, miraculous ways. To look for God only in something big (rallies, churches, conferences, highly visible leaders) may be to miss him because he is often found gently whispering in the quietness of a humbled heart. Are you listening for God? Step back from the noise and activity of your busy life, and listen humbly and quietly for his guidance. It may come when you least expect it. (NLT)
1 Kings 19:1-13 – When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel what Elijah had done and that he had slaughtered the prophets of Baal. So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods also kill me if by this time tomorrow I have failed to take your life like those whom you killed.”
Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. Then he went on alone into the desert, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”
Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” He looked around and saw some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.
Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, for there is a long journey ahead of you.”
So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. There he came to a cave, where he spent the night.
But the Lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah replied, “I have zealously served the Lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I alone am left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”
“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
The Lord your God is in your midst — a warrior bringing victory. He will create calm with his love; he will rejoice over you with singing. — Zephaniah 3:17 (CEB)
Janice Peacemaker (Virginia) titled her story “FINDING GOD IN UNEXPECTED PLACES;” here is Janice’s story:
“After spending five days caring for my father, I was not looking forward to going back to work. I had not slept well and had nothing to take for lunch. I parked my care in a distant parking lot and walked to the building. When I arrived, I saw a basket wrapped with a bow sitting on top of the refrigerator; my name was on the attached card, which I opened and read. A co-worker had written that although I was busy taking care of my dad, I should not forget to take care of yourself. She had given me a gift basket of luxurious bath products and candy.
“Her gift reminded me that God shows up in our lives in unexpected places. . . God showed up for me today in the words and the gift of a co-worker.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God comes to us in unexpected ways.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for loving us and being with us even in places we don’t expect to find you. Amen.
Prayer Focus: THOSE CARING FOR ILL PARENTS
