DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, September 25, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
This parable describes acts of mercy we all can do eve3ry day. These acts do not depend on wealth, ability, or intelligence; they are simple acts freely given and freely received. We have no excuse to neglect those who have deep needs, and we cannot hand over this responsibility to the church or government Jesus demands our personal involvement in caring for others’ needs. (NLT)
Matthew 25:34-40 – [Jesus said] “Then the King will say to those on the right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ And the King will tell them, ‘I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'”
Robert McClure Terhune (Tennessee) titled his story “A GIFT FROM GOD;” here is a portion of Robert’s story:
“Recently many Spanish-speaking persons have moved into our community. . .
“One day I was walking to my car after shopping at my local grocery store. Blocking my path was a young woman holding a girl’s hand and carrying a small boy on her hip. . . I realized she was probably asking for money to buy food, but I continued to my car, putting my food in the trunk. I turned around to see that the woman and her children had followed me. I looked at the little boy perched on his mother’s hip. Though I could have been frightening to him, he returned my gaze with the most beautiful, loving smile I had ever seen. I felt as though I were gazing into the face of Christ himself.
“Then today’s quoted verse came to mind, and I knew what I had to do; I gave them a small gift. . . I realized that I was the one who had received the greater gift.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – It is a blessing to love those whom God brings into my path.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the persons that you bring into our lives. Help us to see others through your love and know they are your children and our brothers and sisters. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
