Weak, dependent people

DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Jesus used a child to help his self-centered disciples get the point. The disciples had become so preoccupied with the organization of Jesus’ earthly kingdom that they had lost sight of its divine purpose. Instead of seeking place of service, they sought positions of advantage. It is easy to lose our eternal perspective and compete for promotions or status in the church. It is difficult to identify with “children”–weak and dependent people with no status or influence. (NLT)

Matthew 18:2-6 – Jesus called a small child over to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I assure you, unless you turn from your sins and become as little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who trusts in me to lose faith, it would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck.”

Paul wrote to Timothy, “I’m reminded of your authentic faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, I’m sure that this faith is also inside you.” — 2 Timothy 1:5 (CEB)

Liduvina Cruz Irizarry (Puerto Rico) titled her story “A VERY REAL PRESENCE;” here is a portion of Liduvina’s story:

“From a young age, Diego has lived with cancer. . .

“But Diego’s parents and grandmother taught him to rely on God’s mercy and healing. They instructed him in the faith that helped him remain courageous and resolute in the face of his daunting illness.

“Today, we give thanks to God for Diego. He has endured great trials — but not alone. Many people have helped, encouraging him with prayers and timely assistance. Diego now smiles with happiness and confidence. God, his constant companion, worked a miracle of love and healing. God was and is a very real presence in Diego’s life.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God’s presence is a healing balm.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for attending to our prayers and manifesting your strength and great love in our children. Amen.
