DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, October 3, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Do you need encouragement? Peter’s words offer joy and hope in times of trouble, and he bases his confidence on what God has done for us in Christ Jesus. We live with the wonderful expectation of eternal life. Our hope is not only for the future; eternal life begins when we trust Christ and join God’s family. No matter what pain or trial we face in this life, we know that it is not our final experience. Eventually we will live with Christ forever.

As gold is heated, impurities float to the top and can be skimmed off. Steel is tempered or strengthened by heating it in fire. Likewise, our trials, struggles, and persecutions refine and strengthen our faith, making us useful to God. (NLT)

1 Peter 1:3-9 – All honor to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for it is by his boundless mercy that God has given us the privilege of being born again. Now we live with a wonderful expectation because Jesus Christ rose again from the dead. For God has reserved a priceless inheritance for his children. It is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And God, in his mighty power, will protect you until you receive this salvation, because you are trusting him. It will be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while.

These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold–and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him, you trust him; and even now you are happy with a glorious, inexpressible joy. Your reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

~ Carrying your worries, stresses, and daily struggles by yourself shows that you have not trusted God fully with your life. It takes humility, however, to recognize that God cares, to admit your need, and to let others in God’s family help you. Sometimes we think that struggles caused by our own sin and foolishness are not God’s concern. But when we turn to God in repentance, he will bear the weight even of those struggles. Letting God have your anxieties calls for action, not passivity. Don’t submit to circumstances but to the Lord, who controls circumstances. (NLT)

1 Peter 5:7Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about what happens to you.

Sharon Beth Brani (Virginia) titled her story “LET THEM GO;” here is a portion of Sharon’s story:

“While on an early morning walk, I felt a gentle breeze. Ahead I noticed hundreds of leaves falling from the nearby maples and oaks. At first my heart sank when I thought about the return of winter with its ice and cold temperatures. But as I watched the reds, oranges, and yellows circle in the air and drift down, I sensed a gentle reminder from God: ‘Let the burdens go. Make room for what I have planned for you.’

“The trees drop their leaves in autumn, making room for the new spring buds. In the same way, I can let go of my burdens, troubles, and cares to make room for the fresh blessings God has in store for me. I can place those cares into God’s hands. When I thought of these assurances that day, my steps became lighter and my heart was filled with peace. We can have that same peace — from the same source — every day.”

Hope gives the abused the courage to leave the house.
Hope is the single mother who works a day job, goes to night school, and loves her children the best way she knows how.
    Hope bends but doesn’t break.
Hope is a gritting of the teeth, a furrowing of the brows, and a digging in of heels.
    Hope is an anchor.
