DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, October 8, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

The psalmist was asking God to revive his people, bringing them back to spiritual life. God is capable of reviving both churches and individuals. He can pour out his love on us, renewing our love for him. If you need revival in your church, family, or personal spiritual life, ask God to give you a fresh touch of his love. (NLT)

Psalm 85:6-13 – Won’t you revive us again, so your people can rejoice in you? Show us your unfailing love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.

I listen carefully to what God the Lord is saying, for he speaks peace to his people, his faithful ones. But let them not return to their foolish ways. Surely his salvation is near to those who honor him; our land will be filled with his glory.

Unfailing love and truth have met together. Righteousness and peace have kissed! Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven. Yes, the Lord pours down his blessings. Our land will yield its bountiful crops. Righteousness goes as a herald before him, preparing the way for his steps.

Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. — Romans 10:17 (NIV)

Janet Pierce (Tennessee) titled her story “HEAR THE MESSAGE;” here is a portion of Janet’s story:

“In my devotional time, my habit has always been to read the scripture quietly to myself. But recently I found myself needing to reread each passage several times. I began to realize I was just allowing my eyes to scan across the page. I was not really paying attention to the passage, and I definitely was not hearing its message. So I began to read the scripture out loud. . . .

“Reading aloud also gives me the opportunity to add expression to the scripture. It allows me to hear and feel the emotions of the passage. It has become easier to understand the message because I am able to hear God’s word to me.

“. . . When we hear and begin to understand God’s message, our faith surely grows stronger.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – How can I hear God’s message anew today?

Prayer: Dear God, open our eyes to read your word. Open our ears to hear your voice. Open our hearts to accept your love. Amen.
