DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Every person dreams and makes plans for the future. Then they work hard to see those dreams and plans come true. But to make the most of life, we must include God’s plan in our plans. He alone knows what is best for us; he alone can fulfill his purpose for us. As you make plans and dream dreams, talk with God about them. (NLT)

Psalm 138:8 – The Lord will work out his plans for my life–for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.

Today’s scripture reading:

God is with us through every situation, in every trial–protecting, loving, guiding. He knows and loves us completely.

God is omnipresent–he is present everywhere. Because this is so, you can never escape from his Spirit. This is good news to those who know and love God, because no matter what we do or where we go, we can never be far from God’s comforting present. (NLT)

Psalm 139:5-18 – You both precede and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to know.

I can never escape from your spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night–but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are both alike to you.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous–and how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up in the morning, you are still with me!

God cares for us

Beverly Dykes (New South Wales, Australia) titled her story “GOD IS WITH US TODAY;” here is a portion of Beverly’s story:

“. . . My maps help me feel connected to others, but God doesn’t need a map to know us. Psalm 139 assures us that God is familiar with all our ways — that before a word leaves our tongues God knows it completely (v. 4). What a comfort in times of distress is this reminder in verse 12: ‘Even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you’!

“Our granddaughter is about to travel on her own to the other side of the world. I am fearful for her safety, but I am confident that God will accompany her wherever she goes. I hold on to Psalm 139:9-10: ‘If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.'”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – In our times of darkness, we can remember that for God, “the night is as bright as the day” (Ps. 139:12).

Prayer: Dear God, when we are disoriented, remind us that you can lead us home because you know us well. We are grateful for your unfailing love. Amen.
