DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, November 6, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
To those who don’t believe in God, life on earth is all there is, and so it is natural to them to strive for this world’s values: money, popularity, power, pleasure, and prestige. For Paul, however, to live meant to develop eternal values and to tell others about Christ, who alone could help them see life from an eternal perspective. Make certain of your eternal destiny; then you will be free to serve–devoting your life to what really counts, without fear of death.
Paul had a purpose for living when he served the Philippians and others. We also need a purpose for living that goes beyond providing for our own physical needs. Whom can you serve or help? What is your purpose for living? (NLT)
Philippians 1:20-26 – For I live in eager expectation and hope that I will never do anything that causes me shame, but that I will always be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past, and that my life will always honor Christ, whether I live or I die. For to me, living is for Christ, and dying is even better. Yet if I live, that means fruitful service for Christ. I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: Sometimes I want to live, and sometimes I long to go and be with Christ. That would be far better for me, but it is better for you that I live.
I am convinced of this, so I will continue with you so that you will grow and experience the joy of your faith. Then when I return to you, you will have even more reason to boast about what Christ Jesus has done for me.
God didn’t give us a spirit that is timid but one that is powerful, loving, and self-controlled. — 2 Timothy 1:7 (CEB)
Gail Babula’s (New Jersey) story is titled “THE SOURCE OF COURAGE;” here is Gail’s story:
“After my stroke, I wanted to get better and return to my family and the life I had left. But after seven months in rehab, I had made minimal progress; I couldn’t move or talk.
“When I finally got home — in my wheelchair — everything was in place for my care. I thought, So this is how it will be for the rest of my life. I will never be able to fully care for myself again. I felt as if someone had kicked me in the stomach.
“The people who visited me told me how strong I was for having gone through so much. But I didn’t think of myself as particularly strong; thousands had done it before me. They even said I had courage. Me, courageous?
“A few years went by before I began to realize that I wasn’t fighting this ‘courageous’ battle alone. God had been with me all along. When I look back at those early days, I recall that I would often feel a sense of calm when I was scared. Where did that calm come from? I believe God was telling me that everything would be all right.
“Every day I continue to deal with the effects of my stroke. But every day God is here keeping me going — giving me courage and helping me to inspire others.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Courage comes from faith that faces fear.
Prayer: O God, when we find ourselves fighting for health, even for our very lives, we thank you that you fight with us. Encourage us with your love shown to us by those who join in our struggle. Amen.
Prayer Focus: THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED STROKES.
