DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, November 20, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
Many of the principles regarding sacrifices and tithes were intended to encourage inward attitudes as well as outward actions. If a person gives grudgingly, he shows that he has a stingy heart. God wants us to be cheerful givers, who give with gratitude to him. (NLT)
Leviticus 27:30-34 – “A tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy. If you want to redeem the Lord’s tenth of the fruit or grain, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent. The Lord also owns every tenth animal counted off from your herds and flocks. They are set apart to him as holy. The tenth animal must not be selected on the basis of whether it is good or bad, and no substitutions will be allowed. If any exchange is in fact made, then both the original animal and the substituted one will be considered holy and cannot be redeemed.”
These are the commands that the Lord gave to the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. — Matthew 7:7 (NIV)
Alicia Yost (Connecticut) titled her story “MORE THAN ENOUGH;” here is Alicia’s story:
“Tithing is a challenge for my family. In some months, giving generously and still paying our bills doesn’t seem possible. We were especially short on money last month, so I prayed. God knows my heart and knows that I desperately want to give our ten percent; but last month, I did’t see how it would be possible. The math didn’t add up. I prayed that God would show me how we could pay our bills and still tithe.
“A few days later, a woman from my church approached me, saying she had a check for me. She hadn’t owed me anything, so her giving me a check made no sense at first. Then she explained that at a fundraiser for my recent mission trip to Ethiopia, she had never given me the funds she had pledged to contribute. I was shocked and thrilled. The amount of the check was just a few dollars short of our ten-percent tithe. We would be able to give after all! I believe God answered my prayer, providing a way for us to pay our bills and to tithe. I was once again reminded of God’s amazing love and generosity.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God provides for us in unexpected ways.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your amazing love and for your promise to hear our prayers. Amen,
