DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, November 23, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

As we face the sunset years, we recognize that God has been our constant help in the past. As physical powers wane, we need God even more, and we realize he is still our constant help. We must never despair, but keep on expecting his help no matter how severe our limitations. Hope in him helps us to keep going, to keep serving him.

A person is never too old to serve God, never too old to pray. Though age may stop us from certain physical activities, it need not end our desire to tell others (especially children) about all we have seen God do in our many years of life. (NLT)

Psalm 71:14-18 – But I will keep on hoping for you to help me; I will praise you more and more. I will tell everyone about your righteousness. All day long I will proclaim your saving power, for I am overwhelmed by how much you have done for me. I will praise your mighty deeds, O Sovereign Lord. I will tell everyone that you alone are just and good.

O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I have constantly told others about the wonderful things you do. Now that I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God.

Those who have been replanted in the Lord’s house . . . will bear fruit even when old and gray; they will remain lush and fresh in order to proclaim: “The Lord is righteous. He’s my rock. There’s nothing unrighteous in him.” — Psalm 92:13-15 (CEB)

Nancy Shelton (Missouri) titled her story “TIME WITH MOM;” here is a portion of Nancy’s story:

What can we do today? I thought as I arrived at the nursing home. Mom could no longer concentrate on television programs or locate hidden words in search-and-find puzzles. Her confusion made conversation difficult.

“. . . I had not read a Bible in months but opened it to the Book of Psalms and began to read aloud. When I glanced back at my mother, she opened her eyes and smiled at me. ‘Thank you,’ she whispered.

“The following morning, I once again found the Bible perched on a pile of clothes. Again I read, this time from the New Testament. My reading the Bible aloud to her became a daily routine until she passed away at the age of 97.

“My mother’s simple gratitude encouraged me to continue reading to her, which led me back to a faith I had lost. And I was reminded that God is with me all the time. Now, I see my mother’s face in my mind each morning when I pick up my own Bible.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God’s word can reach us when nothing else can.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for our elders. Help us take time to listen and learn from them. May we find ways to be a source of comfort to them in their later years. Amen.
