DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, December 3, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

David, helpless and weak, knew that God alone had rescued him from his enemies when he was defenseless. When you wish that God would quickly rescue you from your troubles, remember that he can either deliver you or be your support as you go through them. Either way, his protection is best for you. When you feel like you’re drowning in troubles, ask God to help you, hold you steady, and protect you. In his care, you are never helpless. (NLT)

Psalm 18:16-19 – He reached down from heaven and rescued me, he drew me out of deep waters. He delivered me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. They attacked me at a moment when I was weakest, but the Lord upheld me. He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.

Timothy Austin (Turkey) titled his story “RESCUED;” here is a portion of Timothy’s story:

“During our college days in Northern California, my friends and I decided to go for a swim in the turbulent waters of the Pacific Ocean. . . . The waters were especially unsettled that day. Four of us jumped in, but a few moments later only three emerged. I could not manage to grab hold of the rocks to pull myself out. With the water tugging me under, I was losing strength quickly and beginning to panic. Then I saw my friend reaching down from the rocks above me. Managing to take hold of his hand, I allowed him to pull me up to safety. As I sat on the shore catching my breath, I thanked God for sending help.

“When we find ourselves in situations that threaten our physical, spiritual, or emotional well-being, we can be tempted to despair. If we’re not careful, we can miss the help God is sending our way. A timely message, a scripture verse, someone to listen, the prayers of a friend — even the outstretched arm of a friend to pull us out of the water – are just a few of the way God can come to our aid.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – We can call on God for help when we feel powerless.

Prayer: Dear God, when we are tempted to lose heart, remind us to look to you and receive the help you so lovingly offer. Amen.
