DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, December 10, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
We can bring sorrow to the Holy Spirit by the way we live. Paul warns us against unwholesome language, bitterness, improper use of anger, harsh words, slander, and bad attitudes toward others. Instead of acting that way, we should be forgiving, just as God has forgiven us. Are you bringing sorrow or pleasing God with y9our attitudes and actions? Act in love toward your brothers and sisters in Christ, just as God acted in love by sending his Son to die for your sins.
Just as children imitate their parents, we should follow God’s example. His great love for us led him to sacrifice himself so that we might live. Our love for others should be of the same kind—a love that goes beyond affection to self-sacrificing service. (NLT)
Ephesians 4:28–5:2 – If you are a thief, stop stealing. Begin using your hands for honest work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abuse language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
Here is a portion of Nicole Gonzalez Rodriguez’s (Puerto Rico) story:
“Last year I helped my grandmother at a summer camp where she was a teacher. One day, three young campers were involved in an argument. One of the girls was insulting the other two. . . . the girl who insulted the others admitted her guilt and apologized to the other girls. . . .
“After observing that incident, I gained a new perspective on forgiveness. . . . it is beneficial to swallow our pride and ask for forgiveness. God grants us forgiveness every day. How then can we withhold forgiveness from one another?”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Whom do I need to forgive today?
