DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

If a seasoning has no flavor, it has no value. If Christians make no effort to affect the world around them, they are of little value to God. If we are too much like the world, we are worthless. Christians should not blend in with everyone else. Instead, we should affect others positively, just as seasoning brings out the best flavor in food. (NLT)

Matthew 5:13-16 – [Jesus said] “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your god deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

You are the light of the world. – Matthew 5:14 (CEB)

Brian Beeson (Derbyshire, England) titled his story “RELFECTED LIGHT;” here is a portion of Brian’s story:

“During the Christmas season, my custom has been to draw back the curtains in my living room, switch on the Christmas tree lights so that they shine out in the half-light of early morning, and read my daily Upper Room meditation. One morning last Christmas, I opened the curtains but neglected to switch on the tree lights. As I finished reading the meditation, I looked up and saw that in the gloom was a bright light, shining from the tree. . . .

“I asked myself, What qualities do I reflect to those I meet day by day? As that Christmas ornament has many facets, I too reflect a variety of attitudes: false pride, arrogance, selfishness, boastfulness – mixed up with more worthy attitudes of helpfulness, kindness, compassion, love, and service. By daily spending time with God, I pray that my better characteristics will shine more brightly on those who pass my way.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God calls us to reflect love and compassion to the world.

Prayer: Dear Lord, may the people we meet see your love reflected in our attitudes and actions. Amen.

Prayer Focus: SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A KIND WORD FROM ME
