DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, December 17, 2015
Today’s scripture reading:
As Christians, we should expect continuing tension with an unbelieving world that is “out of sync” with Christ, his Good News, and his people. At the same time, we can expect our relationship with Christ to produce peace and comfort because we are “in sync” with him.
Jesus does not abandon us to our struggles. If we remember that the ultimate victory has already been won, we can claim the peace of Christ in the most troublesome times. (NLT)
John 16:28-33 – [Jesus said] “Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and I will leave the world and return to the Father.”
Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not in parables. Now we understand that you know everything and don’t need anyone to tell you anything. From this we believe that you came from God.”
Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? But the time is coming—in fact, it is already here—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
Shelley Pierce (Tennessee) titled her story “OVERCOMING THROUGH ENDURANCE;” here is a portion of Shelley’s story:
“My friend Lisa taught me that overcoming sometimes means enduring. As a young mother she learned she had cancer. She battled the disease for nearly 10 years, all the while refusing to allow her illness to control her life. Despite the pain she endured, she remained faithful to God. I learned from Lisa that to overcome doesn’t require that we achieve healing or fully understand our situation. Overcoming can mean persevering in the face of adversity, standing strong in convictions and beliefs.
“. . . All through the ages, God has been faithful. God walks with us in our struggles and provides all we need to endure.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – With God’s help, I can persevere in the face of adversity.
Prayer: Protector of all who trust you, thank you for your promise to be with us always. No matter what happens, you have overcome the world! Amen.
Prayer Focus: CANCER PATIENTS
