DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, December 27, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Mary and Martha both loved Jesus. On this occasion they were both serving him. But Martha thought Mary’s style of serving was inferior to hers. She didn’t realize that in her desire to serve, she was actually neglecting her guest. Are you so busy doing things for Jesus that you’re not spending any time with him? Don’t let your service become self-serving. (NLT)

Luke 10:38-42 – As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are so upset over all these details! There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her.”

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. – Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Tez Brooks (Florida) titled his story “THE POWER OF A WHISPER;” here is a portion of Tez’s story:

“. . . When my little girls are playing, I often must whisper to get their attention. Raising my voice doesn’t help; they just don’t hear it. But whispering causes them to quiet down and focus on what I am saying. Only then can they hear my advice or encouragement.

“At times I too get sucked into the distraction of activity . . . Many of my activities are in themselves commendable, until I notice that the Lord has been trying to get my attention.

“Jesus often whispers for us to come and sit at his feet. When we take time to disconnect from our flurry of daily activities, we can hear God’s voice much more clearly.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Slowing down helps us hear God’s voice.

Prayer: God of peace, help us to put you first in our lives. Teach us to slow down and allow your voice to nudge our hearts. Amen.
