DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Wednesday, December 30, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Many people—even Christians—live only to make a good impression on others or to please themselves. But selfishness brings discord.   Paul therefore stressed spiritual unity, asking the Philippians to love one another and to be one in spirit and purpose. When we work together, caring for the problems of others as if they were our problems, we demonstrate Christ’s example of putting others first, and we experience unity. Don’t be so concerned about making a good impression or meeting your own needs that you strain relationships in God’s family. (NLT)

Philippians 2:1-4 – Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and sympathetic? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose.

Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t think only about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.

Educate childrens hearts

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.  — Philippians 2:3 (NIV)

Judith Williams (Florida) titled her story “THE 75-DOLLAR QUESTION;” here is a portion of Judith’s story:

“A few days after Christmas I received an email from one of my favorite stores announcing a 50-percent-off sale. My mind went directly to my checking-account balance. I estimated I could afford to spend about $75.00

“. . . Thinking about how a tube of toothpaste or a pair of underwear could make a difference in a child’s life helped me to decide to use my $75.00 to help others. Years ago, I realized that what matters to God is for us to pay attention to the needs of others and to give wholeheartedly.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I will listen for God’s prompting to give wholeheartedly to others.

Prayer: Remind us, dear God, that putting others’ needs before our own is a sign of our love for you. Amen.
