DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, January 11, 2015

Today’s scripture reading:

Sometimes our burdens seem more than we can bear, and we wonder how we can go on. David stands at this bleak intersection of life’s road and meditates on the Lord, the great burden bearer. God is able to lift us up because (1) his greatness is beyond discovery; (2) he does mighty acts for each generation; (3) he is full of glorious splendor and majesty; (4) he does awe-inspiring deeds; (5) he is righteous; (6) he is kind, merciful, patient, loving, and compassionate; (7) he rules over an everlasting Kingdom; (8) he is our source of all our daily needs; (9) he is righteous and kind in all his dealings; (10) he remains close to those who call on him; (11) he hears our cries and rescues us. If you are bending under a burden and feel that you are about to fall, turn to God for help. He is ready to lift you up and bear your burden. (NLT)

Psalm 145:1-21 – I will praise you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. I will bless you every day, and I will praise you forever. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! His greatness is beyond discovery!

Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts. I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy of your righteousness.

The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to get angry, full of unfailing love. The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation. All of your works will thank you, Lord, and your faithful followers will bless you. They will talk together about the glory of your kingdom; they will celebrate examples of your power. They will tell about your mighty deeds and about the majesty and glory of your reign. For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule generation after generation.

The Lord is faithful in all he says; he is gracious in all he does. The Lord helps the fallen and lifts up those bent beneath their loads. All eyes look to you for help; you give them their food as they need it. When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.

The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness. The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him sincerely. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them. The Lord protects all those who love him, but he destroys the wicked.

I will praise the Lord, and everyone on earth will bless his holy name forever and forever.

Thomas Buice (Tennessee) titled his story “YOU JUST MADE MY DAY;” here is a portion of Thomas’ story:

“‘You just made my day,’ said the clerk receiving payment from my wife, Bonnie. It was neither the large amount of the check nor that we were paying the bill . . . It was Bonnie’s testimony of God’s provision.

“I had just undergone serious surgery and spent several days at the hospital. My insurance covered most of the medical bill, but the hospital stay was only partially covered. Bonnie and I didn’t have the money needed to pay the bill. On the way home from the hospital the day I was released, she was praying again that God would meet our need.

“Checking the mail on the way up our driveway, we found a letter informing us of an overpayment we had made several years ago to a facility in another state. It was almost to the penny the amount due — actually a tad more.

“Bonnie said to the clerk, ‘Before I give you this money, I want you to hear how God takes care of us.’ It was this testimony that prompted the clerk’s joyous response.

“And so we remember that when the Lord ‘makes our day,’ we can share the story of God’s faithfulness with others.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I will make someone’s day by sharing my experience of God’s faithfulness.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for reminding us that your mercies are new every morning. “Great is your faithfulness” (Lam. 3:23). Amen.
