DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Friday, February 5, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Can you hide a city that is sitting on top of a mountain? Its light at night can be seen for miles. If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights; showing others what Christ is like. We hide our light by (1) being quiet when we should speak, (2) going along with the crowd, (3) denying the light, (4) letting sin dim our light, (5) not explaining our light to others, or (6) ignoring the needs of others. Be a beacon of truth—don’t shut your light off from the rest of the world. (NLT)

Matthew 5:14-16 – [Jesus said] “You are the light of the world—like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Leigh Sayers’s (Alabama) story is titled “GOT TICKETS?” Here is a portion of Leigh’s story:

“Saturdays bring many people to our college town. Our home is several blocks off campus but right in the middle of the football excitement. One Saturday, I took an early morning jog through campus carrying some cards with Bible verses that I was trying to memorize.

“Even very early in the morning, people were standing along the streets looking to buy or sell football tickets. As I ran past a man, he yelled, ‘Got tickets?’ I smiled and told him, ‘No, they are Bible verses.’ Without hesitation, he said, ‘I want a Bible verse.’ I immediately felt God’s presence. The verse I was reading and memorizing that day was: ‘So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and to everyone who knocks it will be opened’ (Luke 11:9-10). I handed the man this verse. He read it, smiled, and thanked me. I silently prayed that God would bless him with this message.

“We never know when we will have an opportunity to be the light Jesus calls us to be by sharing God’s word with another person. I certainly did not expect someone to ask me to share while I exercised. Our God is everywhere.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Every day I can look for ways to share God’s word with others.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your guidance provided in the scriptures. Help us to keep your words with us because we never know when we will have an opportunity to share. Amen.
