DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, February 8, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

God’s protection of his people is limitless and can take many forms. David characterized God’s care with five military symbols. God is like (1) a rock that can’t be moved by any who would harm us, (2) a fortress a place of safety where the enemy can’t follow, (3) a shield that comes between us and harm, (4) strength of salvation, a symbol of might and power, (5) a stronghold high above our enemies. If you need protection, look to God. (NLT)

Psalm 18:1-3 – I love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold. I will call on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, for he saves me from my enemies.

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. – Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

Wendy Marshall (Tokyo, Japan) titled her story “OUR STRONG TOWER;” here is a portion of Wendy’s story:

“. . . God is like the safe place in the middle of a game of tag.  My son umderstood right away.  Like most children, he’s hidden behind my legs during a chasing game and declared, ‘Mum is safe!’

“I prayed with him, asking God to help him run to safety in God’s care whenever he needs it. I prayed silently for myself too, that I would be quicker to run to God instead of trying to deal with problems on my own.

“God wants us to pray about our problems and ask for help. Even when bad things happen, we can always find refuge in God’s love. And we can proclaim, ‘I’m safe.’”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can always find refuge in God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us remember that we can always find refuge in you. Amen.
