DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, February 14, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Lying to one another disrupts unity by destroying trust. It tears down relationships and may lead to serious conflict in a church. So don’t exaggerate statistics, pass on rumors or gossip, or say things to build up your won image. Be committed to telling the truth.

What does it mean to clothe yourself with a brand-new nature? It means that your conduct should match your faith. If you are a Christian, you should act like it. To be a Christian means more than just making good resolutions and having good intentions; it means taking the right actions. This is a straightforward step that is as simple as putting on your clothes.

Paul offers a strategy to help us live for God day by day: (1) Imitate Christ’s compassionate, forgiving attitude; (2) let love guide your life; (3) let the peace of Christ rule in your heart; (4) always be thankful; (5) keep God’s Word in you at all times; (6) live as Jesus Christ’s representative.

The key to forgiving others is remembering how much God has forgiven you. Is it difficult for you to forgive someone who has wronged you a little when God has forgiven you so much? Realizing God’s infinite love and forgiveness can help you love and forgive others.

All the virtues that Paul encourages us to develop are perfectly bound together by love. As we clothe ourselves with these virtues, the last garment we are to put on its love, which holds all of the others in place. To practice any list of virtues without practicing love will lead to distortion, fragmentation, and stagnation. (NLT)

Colossians 3:8-14 – But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds. In its place you have clothed yourselves with a brand-new nature that is continually being renewed as you learn more and more about Christ, who created this new nature within you. In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us.

Since God chose you to be the holy people whom he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. You must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony.

Spread Love Everywhere

Here is a portion of Laverne Williams (Georgia) story:

“Each year during the Lenten season my church produces a musical about the life of Jesus Christ. . . . Although the actors all looked very different in person, when clothed in their costumes as Jesus they all looked remarkably alike – making it difficult to distinguish one from the other.

“In a similar way, we too can look like Christ. Not in the physical sense – but when we treat others as Christ would, help others as he did, and love others as he taught, we take on Christ’s image.

“In our reading for today, Paul instructs the Colossians to put off worldly qualities like anger, wrath, and filthy language. Instead, they are to put on the qualities of Christ – kindness, humility, and forgiveness. Every day we can choose to look like our brother, Jesus Christ.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – We honor God when our lives mirror Christ.

Prayer: Creator of all, enable us each day to look more like Christ by renewing our hearts and minds in you. Amen.
