Today’s scripture reading:

Jesus gave this woman an extraordinary message about fresh and pure water that would quench her spiritual thirst forever.

What did Jesus mean by “living water”? In the Old Testament, many verses speak of thirsting after God as one thirsts for water. God is called the fountain of life and the fountain of living water. In saying he would bring living water that could forever quench a person’s thirst for God, Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah. Only the Messiah could give this gift that satisfies the soul’s desire.

As our bodies hunger and thirst, so do our souls. But our souls need spiritual food and water. We would not think of depriving our bodies of food and water when they hunger or thirst. Why then should we deprive our souls? The living Word, Jesus Christ, and the written Word, the Bible, can satisfy our hungry and thirsty souls.

The woman mistakenly believed that if she received the water Jesus offered, she would not have to return to the well each day. She was interested in Jesus’ message because she thought it could make her life easier. But if that were always the case, people would accept Christ’s message for the wrong reasons. Christ did not come to take away challenges, but to change us on the inside and to empower us to deal with problems from God’s perspective. (NLT)

John 4:4-15 – He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.

The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”

Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”

“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this is a very deep well. Where would you get this living water? And besides, are you greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his cattle enjoyed?”

Jesus replied, “People soon become thirsty again after drinking this water. But the water I give them takes away thirst altogether. It becomes a perpetual spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me some of that water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to haul water.

Caryl Moll (Gauteng, South Africa) titled her story “LIVING WATER;” here is a portion of Caryl’s story:

“Water is essential to life. It makes up 50-75 percent of our bodies, yet we often forget to drink enough water or we substitute other drinks that do us little good. As a result, many of us spend our days slightly dehydrated.

“. . . Recently, I created a new daily practice to make these thoughts tangible. . . . While I fill up the glass, I turn my mind to Christ. In gratitude, I sip slowly, thanking him for the life he offers me through this water and his living water. This practice reminds me that Jesus is the source of my life and that I need to spend time with God – the ‘living water’ that sustains me.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Today when I drink water, I will remember the power of Christ’s living water.

Prayer: Dear God, help us to remember that our lives are better when we drink deeply of your living water. Amen.
