DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Even the strongest people get tired at times, but God’s power and strength never diminish. He is never too tired or too busy to help and listen. His strength is our source of strength. When you feel all of life crushing you and you cannot go another step, remember that you can call upon God to renew your strength.

Waiting on the Lord is the patient expectation that God will fulfill his promises in his Word and strengthen us to rise above life’s difficulties. It means to completely trust in God. (NLT)

Isaiah 40:28-31 – Have you never heard or understood? Don’t you know that the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth? He never grows fain or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to those who are tired and worn out; he offers strength to the weak. Even youths will become exhausted, and young men will give up. But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. – Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Julie Douglas (Washington) titled her story “CANCER CHANGED MY LIFE;” here is Julie’s story:

“When I was diagnosed with brain cancer in March 2014, my life, dreams, and goals changed instantly. The doctor told me that after seeing my X-rays, he had expected me to enter his office on a stretcher. However, as God enables me, I am fighting this cancer.

“One way is by relying on God’s promises. Every morning, my mom and I read scripture and pray (some favorites being Ps. 91 [see below] and Ps. 121 [see below].) I have a supportive family, and I know that people around the world are praying for me.

“Even so, I still have to be careful not to dwell on feelings of despair and discouragement. Sometimes when I get a report that my cancer is growing, I want to quit, but I know I can’t. I resolve to trust God whatever happens, since I know that the Lord loves me and knows what I’m going through. It means a lot to me to remember always that the Lord is right here with me every moment.

“During these hard times, I remember stories of people who had to rely totally on God. I’d probably be terrified to face a group of lions (Dan. 6) or be thrown into a fiery furnace (Dan. 3). Yet, these men knew God and trusted in God’s ove and protection. Their stories help me to stand firm.

“I don’t know how my story will end, but I do know I will continue to fight with everything I have and to trust in my Lord and Savior every step of the way.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can be encouraged by those around me and by biblical people of faith.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for giving us strength to endure hard times. Amen.

God is a shelter, a refuge when we are afraid.  The writer’s faith in almighty God as protector would carry him through all the dangers and fears of life.  This should be a picture of our trust–trading all our fears for faith in him, no matter how intense our fears.  To do this we must “live” and “rest” with him.  By entrusting ourselves to his protection and pledging our daily devotion to him, we will be kept safe.

One of the functions of angels is to watch over believers.  There are examples of guardian angels in Scripture, although there is no indication that one angel is assigned to each believer.  Angels can also be God’s messengers.  Angels are not visible, except on special occasions.  It is comforting to know that God watches over us even in times of great stress and fear.  (NLT)

Psalm 91:1-16 – Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  This I declare of the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him.  For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from the fatal plague.  He will shield you with his wings.  He will shelter you with his feathers.  His faithful promises are your armor and protection.  Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor fear the dangers of the day, nor dread the plague that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.  Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.  But you will see it with your eyes; you will see how the wicked are punished.

If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your dwelling.  For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go.  They will hold you with their hands to keep you from striking your foot on a stone.  You will trample down lions and poisonous snakes; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.  I will protect those who trust in my name.  When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble.  I will rescue them and honor them.  I will satisfy them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

This song expresses assurance and hope in God’s protection day and night.  He not only made the hills but heaven and earth as well.  We should never trust a lesser power than God himself.  But not only is he all-powerful, he also watches over us.  Nothing diverts or deters him.  We are safe.  We never outgrow our need for God’s untiring watch over our life.  (NLT)

Psalm 121:1-8 – I look up to the mountains–does my help come from there?  My help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth!

He will not let you stumble and fall; the one who watches over you will not sleep.  Indeed, he who watches over Israel never tires and never sleeps.

The Lord himself watches over you!  The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.  The sun will not hurt you by day, nor the moon at night.  The Lord keeps you from all evil and preserves your life.  The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.
