DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, March 24, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Jesus was not talking about literal blood, of course. He was saying that his life had to become their own, but they could not accept this concept. (NLT)

John 6:53-58 – So Jesus said again, “I assure you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them at the last day. For my flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink. All who eat my flesh and drink my blood remain in me, and I in them. I live by the power of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, those who partake of me will live because of me. I am the true bread from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever and not die as your ancestors did, even though they ate the manna.”

Jesus said, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.” — John 6:56 (NRSV)

Here is a portion of Vicki Hines’s (Tennessee) story:

“. . . If they drank the wine and ate the bread, then Jesus would be inside them and abide in them. . . .

“Abiding in Jesus offers us spiritual strength. As I thought about the times in my life when I was spiritually weak, I realized that they almost always coincided with times when I was not faithfully abiding in Jesus.

“Each day, we have the opportunity to obey Jesus’ instructions to abide in him. Communion, regular Bible reading, prayer, and worship are more than healthy spiritual habits; they are an invitation to abide in Christ as he abides in us.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – How are you inviting Jesus to be part of your life?

Prayer: Dear God, help us to abide in Jesus Christ so that he may be part of all we think, say, and do. Amen.
