DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Thursday, March 31, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

James is referring to someone who is physically ill. In Scripture, oil was both a medicine and a symbol of the Spirit of God. Thus, oil can represent both the medical and the spiritual spheres of life. Christians should not separate the physical and the spiritual. Jesus Christ is Lord over both the body and the spirit.

The “prayer offered in faith” does not refer to the faith of the sick person but to the faith of the people praying. God heal, faith doesn’t, and all prayers are subject to God’s will. But prayer is part of God’s healing process. (NLT)

James 5:13-16 – Are any among you suffering? They should keep on praying about it. And those who have reason to be thankful should continually sing praises to the Lord.

Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. And their prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make them well. And anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. – Colossians 4:2 (NIV)

Linda P. Hamilton (Colorado) titled her story “WHAT TO DO?” Here is a portion of Linda’s story:

“. . . Isn’t prayer what God has always desired from us? . . . Whatever we are facing, God is calling us to pray.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can always pray.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us to turn to you in all circumstances. Thank you for the privilege of prayer. As Jesus taught us, we pray, “Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. They will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgiv e our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (Matt. 6:9-13,KJV).
