DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Saturday, April 2, 2016
Today’s scripture reading:
Obeying God is like building a house on a strong, solid foundation that stands firm when storms come. When life is calm, our foundations don’t seem to matter. But when crises come, our foundations are tested. Be sure your life is built on the solid foundation of knowing and trusting Jesus Christ.
When you find yourself listening but not obeying, what are your reasons? (NLT)
Luke 7:46-49 – [Jesus said] “So why do you call me ‘Lord,’ when you won’t obey me? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then obeys me. It is like a person who builds a house on a strong foundation laid upon the underlying rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who listens and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will crumble into a heap of ruins.”
Someone . . . who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them . . . is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. – Luke 6:47-48 (NRSV)
Tandy Balson (Alberta, Canada) titled her story “FOUNDATION ON THE ROCK;” here is a portion of Tandy’s story:
“Walking along the lakeshore, I looked to the path above. Earlier, while on that path, I had seen signs warning hikers to keep back from the edge; but everything had looked fine. . . . But later, from below I could see that the winter storms had ravaged the bank and in many places had left an overhang with no foundation to support it. . . .
“This scene was a vivid reminder of what life would be like without the firm foundation that God provides. From the outside our lives may look fine. But the sorrow of loss, the pain of illness, or the hurt of rejection has shaken us. . . . By spending time reading the Bible and talking with God in prayer, we build the firm foundation that can keep us secure through life’s storms.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God gives me strength to handle today’s storms.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for providing the firm foundation that we need to remain strong amid the storms of life. Amen.
