Today’s scripture reading:

Elijah knew that the sound of gentle whisper was God’s voice. He realized that God doesn’t reveal himself only in powerful, miraculous ways. To look for God only in something big (rallies, churches, conferences, highly visible leaders) may be to miss him because he is often found gently whispering in the quietness of a humbled heart. Are you listening for God? Step back from your busy life, listen for His guidance. It may come when you least expect it. (NLT)

1 Kings 19:1-13 – When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel what Elijah had done and that he had slaughtered the prophets of Baal. So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods also kill me if by this time tomorrow I have failed to take your life like those whom you killed.”

Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. Then he went on alone into the desert, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”

Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” He looked around and saw some breat baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.

Then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, for there is a long journey ahead of you.”

So he got up and ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to travel forty days and forty nights to Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. There he came to a cave, where he spent the night.

But the Lord said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah replied, “I have jealously served the Lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I alone am left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”

“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived – [are] the things God has prepared for those who love him. – 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV)

Ann Stewart (South Australia, Australia) titled her story “GOD’S SURPRISES;” here is a portion of Ann’s story:

“We read in the story from 1 Kings 19 that even the great prophet Elijah experienced fear and discouragement. God dealt with him kindly and gently, surprising him with an angel and a still small voice.

“At times in my life, I have been surprised by the warmth and peace of God’s Holy Spirit, filling me and reassuring me that God is with me and God is all I need. . . . The unexpected gift of a meal from my church family surprises me with the reminder that God knows my every need. The ways God cares for me never cease to surprise and encourage me. . . .

“The surprises of our loving Creator never end. How amazing to realize that God prepares for us surprises that are what we need when we need them!”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – God’s surprises never end.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for tenderly caring for us. Open our hearts to the surprises with which you bless us. Amen.
