DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Sunday, June 12, 2016

Today’s scripture reading:

Like other Jews, the disciples chafed under their Roman rulers. They wanted Jesus to free Israel from Roman power and then become their king. Jesus replied that God the Father sets the timetable for all events—worldwide, nation, and personal. If you want changes in your life that God hasn’t yet made, don’t become impatient. Instead trust God’s timetable.

Power from the Holy Spirit is not limited to strength beyond the ordinary. That power also involves courage, boldness, confidence, insight, ability, and authority. The disciples would need all these gifts to fulfill their mission. If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior, you can experience the power of the Holy Spirit in your life. (NLT)

Acts 1:6-11 – When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, are you going to free Israel now and restore our kingdom?”

“The Father sets those dates,” he replied, “and they are not for you to know. But when the Holy Spirt has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judes, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

It was not long after he said this that he was taken up into the sky while they were watching, and he disappeared into a cloud. As they were straining their eyes to see him, two white-robed men suddenly stood there among them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here staring at the sky? Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. And someday, just as you saw him go, he will return!”

Dianne T. Evans (South Carolina) titled her story “THE GREATEST OF THESE;” here is a portion of Dianne’s story:

“When I befriended a ninety-five-year-old woman in our community, I hoped to add joy to her days. I soon found that I had much to learn. In my frequent visits with her during the three years before her death, I learned that I had overestimated what I could bring to her and underestimated what she had to offer me. . . . The greatest lesson I learned was that noen of our differences prevented meaningful friendship.

“. . . I loved spending time with her and learning from her deep spiritual insight.

“’The Lord has brought us together,’ she said. ‘The Holy Spirit has come upon us.’

“Now, as I drive by her empty house, I hear her voice saying again, ‘We must read the word, and we must live the word.’ I know that she has gone on to be with Christ. I can best honor our friendship by sharing the gifts she so graciously bestowed on me.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – Today I will love others as God loves me.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for people who bring us closer to you. Give us the desire to be faithful to your word. Amen.
