DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Monday, June 20, 2016
Today’s scripture reading:
The greatness of God assures the worth of mankind. God, the all-powerful Creator, cares for His most valuable creation, people.
Children are able to trust and praise God without doubts or reservations. As we get older, many of us find this more and more difficult to do. Ask God to give you childlike faith, removing any barriers to having a closer walk with him.
To respect God’s majesty, we must compare ourselves to his greatness. When we look at creation, we often feel small by comparison. To feel small is a healthy way to get back to reality, but God does not want us to dwell on our smallness. Humility means proper respect for God, not self-depreciation.
When we look at the vast expanse of creation, we wonder how God could be concerned for people who constantly disappoint him. Yet God created us only a little lower than himself or the angels! The next time yo9u question your worth as a person, remember that God considers you highly valuable. We have great worth because we bear the stamp of the Creator. Because God has already declared how valuable we are to him, we can be set free from feelings of worthlessness.
God gave human beings tremendous authority—to be in charge of the whole earth. But with great authority comes great responsibility. If we own a pet, we have the responsibility to feed and care for it. How do you treat God’s creation? Use your resources wisely because God holds you accountable as stewards. (NLT)
Psalm 8:1-9 – O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and nursing infants to give you praise. They silence your enemies who were seeking revenge.
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you have set in place—what are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us? For you made us only a little lower than God, and you crowned us with glory and honor. You put us in charge of everything you made, giving us authority over all things—the sheep and the cattle and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.
O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth!
Narda Luz Vargas’ (Dominican Republic) story is titled “WHO AM I TO COMPLAIN?” Here is a portion of Narda’s story:
“. . . It seems that many of us find it difficult to fulfill the potential for which we were created or to establish a devotional life even when we are healthy and whole. I felt embarrassed that I had been griping about everyday irritation. . . . Sometimes it seems like I can never be satisfied. So I was faced with the question: Who am I to complain?
“For many of us, complaining is so common in our lives that we hardly notice when we do it. It is more important to value what we have. Our hope lies in the gifts, talents, and strengths we possess that can be used in God’s service. When we begin using our gifts, we will find that we complain less and praise more.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY – I can serve the Lord with gladness.
Prayer: Loving God, help us to cease our complaining and to acknowledge all the blessings you have given us. Amen.
